Gr to Tsp Converter: Ingredient-Aware Gram to Teaspoon Math
A gr to tsp conversion turns a mass in grams into a volume in US teaspoons (4.929 mL each), and the result is different for every ingredient. 5 g of water is 1.01 tsp, 5 g of sugar 1.19 tsp, 5 g of salt 0.83 tsp, and 5 g of dried basil a heaped 7.14 tsp. The single multiplier that solves it is grams per teaspoon, set by the food’s density.
What a gr to tsp conversion really is
A gr to tsp conversion divides a mass by the food’s grams-per-teaspoon density. Grams measure mass, teaspoons measure volume, and density is the bridge. Without an ingredient, the question has no numerical answer.
The US teaspoon is defined by NIST as exactly one sixth of a US fluid ounce, or 4.92892159375 mL. The grams-per-teaspoon value for any food is its density in g/mL multiplied by 4.929. Water at 1.00 g/mL gives 4.93 g/tsp; granulated sugar at 0.85 g/mL gives 4.19 g/tsp; dried basil at 0.14 g/mL gives 0.69 g/tsp. Same teaspoon, three very different gram totals.
King Arthur Baking, the oldest flour company in the United States (founded 1790), offers weight-based recipes alongside volume measurements after measuring how much the gram weight of a “cup of flour” varied between bakers. The spread was 110 to 156 g per cup, a 40 percent range.
Why grams to teaspoons depends on the ingredient
The density of a food sets how many grams fit in one teaspoon. Foods packed with air (dried herbs, kosher salt, powdered sugar) have low density and need many teaspoons to reach a few grams. Dense, syrupy foods (honey, maple syrup) hold a lot of mass in one teaspoon. The numbers powering this converter come from the FAO/INFOODS density database (version 2.0) and the USDA FoodData Central, accurate within five to ten percent for typical home use.
Three teaspoon sizes around the world
Three teaspoon sizes are still in use. The US teaspoon (4.929 mL) is one sixth of a US fluid ounce. The metric teaspoon (exactly 5 mL) is the global standard outside the US. The imperial teaspoon (5.919 mL) was the British standard before metrication and now appears only in old UK cookbooks.

The 1.4 percent gap between US and metric teaspoons is smaller than the spread from heaping versus leveling, so the converter ignores it. For pharmacy work, the FDA's 2011 guidance recommends mL on liquid-medicine labels.
Gr to tsp for sugar, salt, and flour
The three baking staples each have their own density, and confusing them is the most common kitchen mistake. Granulated white sugar is 4.2 g/tsp, table salt is 6.0 g/tsp, and all-purpose flour is 2.6 g/tsp. So 10 g of sugar is 2.38 tsp, 10 g of salt is 1.67 tsp, and 10 g of flour is 3.85 tsp.
Salt is the largest single risk. Diamond Crystal kosher salt is 3.2 g/tsp, while Morton table salt is 6.0 g/tsp, so following a recipe that says “1 tsp salt” with the wrong type can nearly double the sodium load.
A teaspoon of flour weighs 2.6 g when scooped lightly and the surplus is leveled with a knife. The same spoon, pressed and packed, holds 2.9 to 3.1 g. That 15 to 20 percent gap changes the hydration of a small bread or pancake batch by enough to feel.
Gr to tsp for honey, oil, and syrups
Liquid sweeteners are the densest food group in a typical kitchen. Honey is 7.0 g/tsp at 1.42 g/mL, maple syrup is 6.7 g/tsp, and molasses about 7.1 g/tsp. So 5 g of honey is only 0.71 tsp, less than three quarters of a level spoon, even though 5 g of water is a full teaspoon.
Cooking oils run the other way. Vegetable oil, olive oil, sunflower oil, and rapeseed oil all sit at 0.91 to 0.92 g/mL, giving 4.5 g/tsp. So 5 g of olive oil is 1.11 tsp. The mass-volume gap is small enough that home cooks often ignore it, but it matters for nutrition labels: 1 tablespoon of olive oil contains 13.5 g and 119 kcal, not 15 g.
Gr to tsp for spices and dried herbs
Spices and dried herbs are where assuming “5 g per teaspoon” goes most wrong. Ground spices land around 2.3 to 2.8 g/tsp; dried leafy herbs are the lightest at 0.7 to 1.0 g/tsp. Two grams of dried oregano is 2.04 tsp, more than a tablespoon. Two grams of table salt is one third of a teaspoon. The converter handles each case from its own density.
If you do not see your spice listed, pick “Paprika” or “Black pepper” (both 2.3 g/tsp) as a generic ground-spice stand-in, or “Dried oregano” (1.0 g/tsp) for any dried leafy herb. The error stays within ten percent.

Four mistakes account for almost every wrong gr to tsp result. First, using one fixed multiplier (often 5 g per tsp) for every ingredient. Second, confusing the salt type, where kosher and table salt differ by a factor of nearly two. Third, packing the spoon for flour or brown sugar without telling the calculator, which assumes a light, leveled scoop. Fourth, using a flatware spoon instead of a calibrated measuring spoon: dinner-table teaspoons range from 2 to 9 mL in volume.

For most home recipes, three numbers do the job: 4 for sugar, 6 for salt, 2.5 for flour and most spices. Divide the gram weight by the matching value. 12 g of sugar divided by 4 is 3 tsp; 9 g of salt divided by 6 is 1.5 tsp; 7.5 g of flour divided by 2.5 is 3 tsp. The arithmetic stays accurate within 15 percent, well inside the spread of natural variation between brands.
For honey and syrups, divide by 7. For oils and butter, divide by 4.5. For water-based liquids (broth, milk), divide by 5.
