Anders Ericsson's research on expertise, popularised by Malcolm Gladwell in 2008, suggested that world-class performance in complex domains correlates with roughly 10,000 hours of deliberate practice. In calendar time that is 10,000 ÷ 8,760 = 1.14 years of nonstop activity, which is obviously not how anyone actually accumulates it.
