Always use actual dimensions: a 2x4 labelled at the lumberyard is really 1.5" × 3.5". Calculating board feet with the nominal 2 × 4 inflates your total by 33%.
BF per lineal foot is the shortcut: a 2x4 carries ~0.44 BF/ft; a 2x6 carries ~0.69; a 2x10 carries ~1.16. Multiply by the run length for a quick total.

It survives because it puts a single number on a board of any shape: thickness times width times length, with the units massaged so the answer comes out clean for typical lumber-sized boards. Nominal vs actual lumber dimensions

The nominal label refers to the rough-cut size of the green log section before drying and surfacing. A piece milled at 2 inches thick and 4 inches wide in the green-rough state loses approximately half an inch in each dimension during seasoning and the two-pass surfacing that produces the smooth S4S finish sold at lumberyards. The actual dimensions that emerge — 1.5" by 3.5" for a nominal 2x4 — are codified in the American Softwood Lumber Standard PS 20-20, published by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

The pattern is consistent across the size table. Nominal 1-inch stock comes out 0.75 inches thick. Nominal 2-inch stock dries to 1.5 inches. Nominal 4-inch stock surfaces to 3.5 inches. Width follows the same logic: a 2 lose 0.5 inches, a 4 loses 0.5, but widths of 8 inches and above lose 0.75 inches because the larger cross-section experiences more shrinkage. That puts a nominal 2x10 at 1.5" by 9.25", not 1.5" by 9.5".

Until 1964, US 2x4s were closer to actual size — usually 1.625" by 3.625" finished. The current 1.5" by 3.5" standard was adopted in 1964 after lumber producers lobbied the Department of Commerce to reduce dimensions, partly to compete with imported metric stock. Older houses built before 1964 contain "true" 2x4s, which is why retrofitting framing in a pre-1964 home often needs furring strips to flush up to modern lumber.

What a board foot really measures

One board foot equals 144 cubic inches of wood. The reference shape is a board 12 inches wide, 12 inches long, and 1 inch thick, but the unit is dimensionless to shape — only the volume matters. A 1" by 6" by 24" board contains exactly one board foot. So does a 2" by 6" by 12" piece. So does a 1" by 12" by 12" piece. They are all 144 cubic inches.

The mixed-unit formula BF = (T × W × L) ÷ 12, with thickness and width in inches and length in feet, is the working tool. The division by 12 cancels the inch-to-foot conversion on the length term, so the answer comes out in board feet without further arithmetic. A 2x4 by 8 feet contains (1.5 × 3.5 × 8) ÷ 12 = 3.5 board feet of wood. A 2x12 by 16 feet contains (1.5 × 11.25 × 16) ÷ 12 = 22.5 board feet.

Standard US dimension lumber sizes

Dimension lumber covers the 2x and 4x stock used for framing: 2x4, 2x6, 2x8, 2x10, 2x12 for joists and studs, 4x4 and 4x6 for posts and beams. Boards — the 1x stock from 1x2 through 1x12 — are graded separately and used for trim, sheathing, and shelving. The American Softwood Lumber Standard PS 20-20 defines the actual dimensions for all of these, with separate tables for surfaced (dressed) and rough-cut stock.

The Western Wood Products Association and the Southern Pine Inspection Bureau publish the matching grading rules for the two main softwood-producing regions of the US. Stock graded under either rule meets PS 20-20 dimensions, so the actual sizes are interchangeable. Where they differ is in allowable defects (knots, checks, wane) and structural grades for engineering calculations.

Pre-1964 lumber is dimensionally larger

Houses built before 1964 typically contain 2x4 studs at 1-5/8" by 3-5/8" or even 1-3/4" by 3-3/4". When sistering joists or adding framing in an older home, measure the existing stock and either rip modern lumber to match or shim with strips. Stacking modern 1.5" by 3.5" against an older 1.625" by 3.625" leaves a visible offset that drywall will not flatten.

Hardwood lumber dimensions and quarter grading

Hardwood is sold differently. Rather than nominal 2x and 4x labels, hardwood lumber uses the quarter system for thickness: 4/4 (one inch), 5/4 (1.25"), 6/4 (1.5"), 8/4 (2"), and so on up to 16/4 (4 inches). These are the rough thicknesses before any surfacing. A 4/4 board surfaced on two faces (S2S) finishes at about 13/16", and a 4/4 board surfaced on all four sides (S4S) at about 3/4".

Width on hardwood is variable, not standardized. A pack of 4/4 walnut might range from 4 inches to 12 inches wide piece-by-piece because hardwood is cut to maximize yield from each log rather than to fixed dimensions. The National Hardwood Lumber Association grading rules (NHLA) govern grading by clear-face area, not by dimension. As a result, hardwood is almost always priced and sold by the board foot directly, not by the lineal foot.

The quarter system originated in pre-industrial sawmills, where the saw kerf was so thick that anything thinner than 4/4 finished was impractical. The smallest commercial hardwood thickness is still 4/4. Veneers and thin stock are sliced separately, not sawn, and graded under different rules.

Practical conversion between board feet and lineal feet

Big-box lumberyards usually price 2x and 4x stock per piece or per lineal foot, while specialty hardwood dealers and bulk softwood suppliers price by the board foot. Converting between the two systems takes a single coefficient — BF/LF = (T × W) ÷ 12, computed once per size. A 2x4 carries 0.4375 BF per lineal foot. A 2x6 carries 0.6875. A 4x4 carries about 1.02. Memorize the coefficient for the sizes you buy most often and the conversion takes seconds.

For job estimating, that coefficient lets you flip price quotes between formats. A 2x4 quoted at $4 per 8-foot stud is $4 / (8 × 0.4375) = $1.14 per board foot. A 2x6 quoted at $560 per MBF (1,000 BF) is $0.56 per BF, or $0.56 × 0.6875 = $0.385 per lineal foot, or about $3.08 per 8-foot stick. The translation matters most when comparing a big-box studs-per-piece price against a yard's per-MBF wholesale quote.

Common lumber dimension mistakes

Calculating board feet from nominal sizes

Using nominal 2 × 4 × 8 in the formula gives 5.33 BF, but the real board foot count for that piece is 3.5 BF based on the actual 1.5 × 3.5 cross-section. That is a 52% overestimate. For pricing or shipping calculations, always use actual dimensions. For span tables and load calculations, codes specify which dimension to use — the International Residential Code references actual sizes throughout.

Mixing inches and feet without dividing by 12

The mixed-unit formula (T × W × L) ÷ 12 only works when thickness and width are in inches and length is in feet. If you have all three in inches, divide by 144. If all three are in feet, do not divide at all — the answer comes out in cubic feet, which equals 12 board feet. Track the units explicitly when bidding from architectural plans that mix dimensioning conventions.

Treating 1x stock as half a 2x

A 1x4 is not half a 2x4. Actual 1x stock is 0.75" thick, not 0.75" × 2 = 1.5". The 0.5-inch deduction is per face, not per nominal inch. As a result a 1x6 carries 0.3438 BF/LF while a 2x6 carries 0.6875 BF/LF — exactly double. The 1x to 2x ratio is preserved on board feet because both faces lose the same 0.5-inch deduction, but never extrapolate this to mid-range sizes without checking the table.

Assuming hardwood and softwood follow the same rules

The nominal-to-actual table is for softwood dimension lumber only. Hardwood uses the quarter system (4/4, 6/4, 8/4) for thickness and variable widths. A board labelled 6/4 walnut is rough 1.5" thick, not the same dressed thickness as a softwood 2x. When ordering hardwood, ask for surfaced (S2S or S4S) thickness in inches if you need a finished dimension.
