A milligram is mass; a teaspoon is volume. To convert between them you need the density of whatever you are measuring. One teaspoon of water weighs 5,000 mg. One teaspoon of table salt weighs 5,800 mg. One teaspoon of cocoa powder weighs 2,500 mg. The same teaspoon, three different masses, because densities differ by almost three times.

Why the mg-to-teaspoon conversion needs density

Mass equals volume times density. A metric teaspoon is 5 mL exactly — that part never changes. What changes is how much mass fits into those 5 mL. Water at 1.00 g/mL gives 5,000 mg per teaspoon. Honey at 1.42 g/mL gives 7,100 mg. Cocoa powder at 0.50 g/mL gives only 2,500 mg. Without knowing the ingredient, the mg-to-teaspoon question has no single answer.

The spread is 2,500 mg to 7,100 mg — a factor of 2.8. If a recipe called for "500 mg of salt" without specifying salt type, the volume answer could be anywhere from one-twelfth to one-fifth of a teaspoon.

The teaspoon: three different sizes

The teaspoon is not one fixed unit. The metric teaspoon is exactly 5 millilitres. The US customary teaspoon is 4.92892 mL — one sixth of a US fluid ounce. The historical British imperial teaspoon was 5.919 mL. For everyday cooking the 1.4% gap between metric and US teaspoons is meaningless. The FDA adopted 5 mL as the rounded value for drug labels in 2011 to remove a source of dosing error. This calculator uses 5 mL.

The word "teaspoon" first appeared in English cookbooks around 1660, when tea was a luxury good taxed at 119% and sipped with tiny gold spoons. As the tax on tea fell in 1784, the spoon grew with the cups. By the early 20th century the US National Bureau of Standards (now NIST) had pinned the US teaspoon at one sixth of a fluid ounce — 4.92892 millilitres — where it has stayed ever since.

Salt and the 2,300 mg sodium limit

Sodium chloride is roughly 40% sodium by weight. A teaspoon of fine table salt weighs about 5,800 mg. Multiply by 0.40 and a single teaspoon delivers about 2,300 mg of sodium — exactly the upper Daily Value set by the FDA, and close to the World Health Organization recommendation of under 2,000 mg sodium per day. US average intake sits around 3,400 mg sodium daily, much of it from packaged foods rather than the salt shaker.

Kosher salt is not table salt

A teaspoon of fine table salt weighs about 5,800 mg. A teaspoon of Diamond Crystal kosher salt weighs only about 2,800 mg — the flaky crystals trap air. Morton kosher is somewhere in between at around 4,800 mg. Using table salt one-for-one in a recipe that meant kosher will double the salt. Some recipes specify "Diamond Crystal" by brand for this reason.

Mg to teaspoon for medicine: do not do this

The single most important rule with mg-to-teaspoon conversions: do not use density tables for medicine. Liquid medicines are labelled by concentration, not density. A children's ibuprofen suspension labelled "100 mg per 5 mL" means 20 mg of active drug per millilitre, regardless of the syrup's density. The right volume for a 200 mg dose is 10 mL, full stop.

The FDA's 2011 guidance on Dosage Delivery Devices requires manufacturers to label OTC liquid drugs in millilitres and supply a calibrated oral syringe or dosing cup. A 2010 Annals of Internal Medicine study measured kitchen spoons and found they hold anywhere from 2 mL to 9 mL. Using a kitchen teaspoon for a 5 mL dose can deliver less than half or almost twice the intended amount.

Tip

If the label reads "100 mg / 5 mL," ignore teaspoons completely. Use the syringe that came with the medicine, or ask the pharmacy for an oral dosing syringe. They are free. The mg-to-tsp converter on this page is for cooking, not pharmacy.

Sugar, baking soda and cocoa densities

Sugar comes in three common forms with three different mg-per-teaspoon values. Granulated white sugar runs around 4,200 mg per teaspoon. Brown sugar, packed firmly, climbs to about 4,600 mg because molasses makes the crystals stickier. Powdered sugar is the lightest at 3,950 mg per teaspoon — the fine grind traps air pockets that lower the effective density.

Baking soda is significantly denser than sugar at 5,500 mg per teaspoon. Baking powder is around 4,600 mg because it is a mixture of baking soda, an acid, and a starch buffer. Cocoa powder and ground cinnamon sit at the low end of the table, around 2,500–2,640 mg per teaspoon.

Supplements and powders

Mg-to-teaspoon questions often come up for powdered supplements. A 5,000 mg daily creatine dose works out to roughly one rounded teaspoon of creatine monohydrate. A 1,300 mg calcium target from calcium carbonate powder is about a quarter teaspoon. A 90 mg vitamin C dose, however, is less than one sixty-fourth of a teaspoon — well below what you can measure with a spoon — and that is why vitamin C is sold in pills.

Mg-to-teaspoon mistakes to avoid

Assuming 1 mg = 1 mL. This works only for water and only approximately. For honey, the same volume is 42% heavier. For oil, 8% lighter. Density matters.

Confusing teaspoon with tablespoon. One tablespoon is three teaspoons. In medicine a teaspoon-versus-tablespoon mix-up has caused fatal dosing errors. In cooking it ruins the dish.

Using a kitchen spoon instead of a measuring spoon. Soup spoons and dessert spoons from the drawer have nothing to do with the standardised 5 mL measuring teaspoon. Variation runs 2–9 mL.

Ignoring which salt or sugar is meant. 1 tsp table salt = 5,800 mg; 1 tsp Diamond Crystal kosher salt = 2,800 mg. 1 tsp granulated sugar = 4,200 mg; 1 tsp packed brown sugar = 4,600 mg. Specify or lose accuracy.
