A screen size converter takes one piece of information — usually the diagonal in inches — and works out the width, height, area, and centimetre equivalents you actually need for planning. A 55-inch 16:9 television is 47.9 inches (121.8 cm) wide and 27.0 inches (68.5 cm) tall on the active panel. A 27-inch 1440p monitor sits at 108.8 PPI. The arithmetic is one application of Pythagoras and one exact unit factor (2.54 cm per inch), but the implications — cabinet fit, viewing distance, image sharpness — depend on aspect ratio and resolution as much as on diagonal alone.
This article covers what the marketing number really refers to, how to flip between inches and centimetres, why aspect ratio decides whether two "55-inch" panels have the same width, what PPI means for perceived sharpness, and the most common ways people misread screen specifications when buying.
What a screen size actually measures
Manufacturers report the diagonal of the active display area, corner to corner. The bezel (frame) is excluded. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has required this disclosure since the 1960s, after class-action complaints about televisions advertised by cabinet width rather than viewable picture. Today the convention is global: a 65" TV in Tokyo, Berlin, or Dallas refers to the same diagonal panel measurement.
Inches remain the unit of record. The U.S. consumer-electronics industry standardised early on inch-sized cathode-ray tubes in the 1940s, and the labelling stuck even in countries on the metric system. The actual standard, set by the Consumer Technology Association's display measurement guidelines, expresses everything in inches and then notes the centimetre equivalent in brackets.
The 16:9 ratio was adopted by the ITU in 1989 as a compromise between cinema's 2.35:1 and television's older 4:3. It is not arithmetically halfway, but visually it splits the difference: rotate a 16:9 rectangle 90 degrees and you still get a recognisably "video-shaped" frame. About 95 percent of new consumer screens sold today are 16:9 or near-variants like 16:10.
Inches to centimetres for screens
One inch equals exactly 2.54 centimetres. The factor is not a measurement; it is a definition, fixed in 1959 by the International Yard and Pound Agreement between the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. For screen work the practical conversions are short:
- 24" — 61.0 cm diagonal
- 27" — 68.6 cm diagonal
- 32" — 81.3 cm diagonal
- 43" — 109.2 cm diagonal
- 55" — 139.7 cm diagonal
- 65" — 165.1 cm diagonal
For mental math, multiply by 2.5 and add 2 percent. A 55-inch screen becomes 55 × 2.5 = 137.5 cm, plus 2 percent = 140.3 cm. The exact answer is 139.7 cm — close enough for furniture planning. Going the other way, a 140 cm screen divided by 2.5 gives 56 inches, then subtract 2 percent for 54.9 inches. Close to 55.
Aspect ratio is half the answer
Diagonal alone does not pin down width and height. A 50-inch 4:3 television is 40.0 inches wide and 30.0 inches tall; a 50-inch 16:9 television is 43.6 inches wide and 24.5 inches tall — nearly 9 percent wider and 18 percent shorter for the same nominal size. Two screens sold as "the same 50-inch" panel can occupy very different shelf space.
For modern displays the common ratios are 16:9 (the default for TVs, most monitors, and laptops), 16:10 (productivity monitors, MacBook lines, some Surface devices), 21:9 and 32:9 (ultrawide gaming and creative monitors), and 4:3 (legacy panels, some industrial displays, the older iPad). The multipliers in the formulas tab give the exact width and height factors for each ratio.
A 34-inch 21:9 ultrawide monitor sounds bigger than a 27-inch 16:9 panel, but the actual heights are 13.4 inches and 13.2 inches — nearly identical. The ultrawide adds horizontal real estate, not vertical. If you need taller documents or web pages, a 27-inch 16:9 or 30-inch 16:10 monitor delivers more usable vertical pixels than most 34-inch ultrawides.
PPI: when bigger screens look worse
Pixels per inch (PPI) measures how densely pixels are packed on the panel. For the same resolution, a larger screen has a lower PPI — the same 1920 by 1080 pixels stretched over a 55-inch TV gives 40 PPI, but compressed onto a 24-inch monitor gives 92 PPI. Below roughly 80 PPI individual pixels become visible at typical desk-viewing distances, the "screen door" effect.
Apple's "Retina" threshold marketing benchmark sits around 218 PPI at standard viewing distance for desktop displays, and around 300 PPI for phones held about 25 cm from the eye. The human eye's angular resolution is the constraint; once pixels are smaller than what the retina can distinguish at a normal viewing distance, more PPI buys nothing visible.
The "PPI" and "DPI" labels are routinely interchanged but mean different things historically. DPI (dots per inch) is a printing concept dating back to the 1980s ImageWriter era. PPI (pixels per inch) is for screens. On a modern display they are numerically the same; on a printer they are not, because a single colour pixel may be reproduced by multiple ink dots.
Choosing a screen size for the room
SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) recommends a viewing angle of 30 degrees for cinematic immersion, which works out to a viewing distance of roughly 1.6 times the screen width, or about 1.4 times the diagonal. THX uses a 36-degree angle, giving 1.2 times the diagonal. The U.S. Consumer Technology Association takes a more conservative position at 1.5 to 2.5 times the diagonal for general TV viewing.
For desks, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) computer-workstation guidelines call for the screen at arm's length — roughly 50 to 75 cm from the eye. That distance pairs naturally with 24-inch and 27-inch monitors. Anything 32 inches or larger pushes the viewer too close for comfortable single-glance reading; head movement starts to dominate.
- 43" 4K TV — sit about 1.4–2.7 m (4.5–9 ft) away
- 55" 4K TV — sit about 1.8–3.5 m (6–11 ft) away
- 65" 4K TV — sit about 2.1–4.1 m (7–13 ft) away
- 24" desktop monitor — eye distance ~50–60 cm
- 27" desktop monitor — eye distance ~60–75 cm
- 34" ultrawide — eye distance ~70–85 cm
Common screen-size mistakes
The 55-inch label refers to the panel, not the outer cabinet. A modern slim-bezel TV adds 1–2 cm per edge; a budget panel can add 3–5 cm. For a wall niche or cabinet cutout, measure the manufacturer's published outer dimensions, not the calculator output. Always leave 2–3 cm of clearance for ventilation as well.
"A 50-inch TV" does not mean 50 inches wide. For 16:9 the actual width is 43.6 inches and height 24.5 inches. People sketching wall layouts who treat the diagonal as the width end up planning for a panel 15 percent narrower than what arrives.
Upgrading from a 24-inch 1080p monitor to a 32-inch 1080p one for the same resolution drops PPI from 92 to 69. Text becomes visibly blurrier and individual pixels show up on solid backgrounds. To preserve sharpness when stepping up size, step up the resolution too (1440p at 27 inches, 4K at 32 inches and above).
