Weeks to Months Calculator: Why 40 Weeks Is Not 10 Months
One month equals 4.348125 weeks on average, the value of 365.25 days divided by 12 months and 7 days per week. That is why 40 weeks of pregnancy works out to 9.2 months, not 10, and why a 12-week probation runs short of a full 3 calendar months by about 7 days.
The mismatch comes from how the Gregorian calendar packs months of unequal length. February has 28 days in non-leap years, exactly 4 weeks. Every other month runs 30 or 31 days, between 4.29 and 4.43 weeks. Average them and you get the constant that drives every weeks-to-months calculation, including pregnancy dating, lease arithmetic, and software release cycles.
What weeks to months really means
A week is a fixed 7-day unit. A month is not. The 12 months of the Gregorian year span 28, 29, 30, or 31 days, totalling 365 (or 366 in a leap year). To convert weeks to months you have to choose a reference: the average calendar month (30.44 days, 4.348 weeks), the lunar month (28 days, exactly 4 weeks), or a fixed 30-day “banking month”.
The average calendar month is the standard for medical, legal, and financial use. NIST documents the Gregorian year at 365.2425 days, with 365.25 commonly used for arithmetic. Spread evenly across 12 months and divided by 7, every average month holds 4.348125 weeks. That is the number used by ACOG for pregnancy week mapping and the number the calculator above uses by default.
The Babylonians used a 28-day lunar month, which is exactly 4 weeks. That convention survives in Japanese pregnancy counting (“tōtsuki tōka”, 10 months 10 days = 280 days = 40 weeks) and in Islamic religious months that follow the moon, not the sun.
The weeks-to-months formula
The math is one division. Weeks divided by 4.348125 equals months. Months multiplied by 4.348125 equals weeks. Both formulas use the same constant, which is why the calculator above can take either input and produce the other instantly.

For 40 weeks: 40 × 0.23 = 9.20 months, which matches the exact 9.198 to two decimals. For 12 weeks: 12 × 0.23 = 2.76 months. The reverse shortcut is months × 4.35, which is accurate to two decimals for any duration under five years.
Weeks to months in pregnancy
Pregnancy is tracked in weeks because human gestation is too short for months to give useful precision. A full-term pregnancy runs 40 weeks counted from the first day of the last menstrual period (LMP), about two weeks before actual conception. ACOG and NICHD use a fixed week-to-month mapping for clinical milestones:
- Month 1: weeks 1 to 4
- Month 2: weeks 5 to 8
- Month 3: weeks 9 to 13 (end of first trimester)
- Month 5: weeks 18 to 22 (halfway point)
- Month 7: weeks 28 to 31 (third trimester begins)
- Month 9: weeks 36 to 40 (full term)
- Early term: 37+0 to 38+6 weeks
- Full term: 39+0 to 40+6 weeks
- Late term: 41+0 to 41+6 weeks
- Post-term: 42+0 weeks and beyond
Clinicians use gestational age, counted from LMP. Embryologists and IVF clinics use conceptional age, counted from fertilization. The two differ by about 14 days. When someone says “I am 8 weeks pregnant”, they almost always mean gestational age.
Weeks to months in work and probation
Employment contracts mix both units, often inconsistently. A “3-month probation” in a US offer letter usually means 90 calendar days, which equals 12.86 weeks, not 13. A “12-week probation” in a UK contract is 84 days, about 2.76 months. If the contract says one and HR enforces the other, you can lose almost a week on either side.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics counts “short-term unemployment” as under 27 weeks, which equals 6.21 months. That choice was deliberate: 27 weeks splits the year almost exactly in half (52/2 = 26) but rounds up to a clean number. Long-term unemployment starts at 27 weeks, or roughly half a year.
When negotiating a notice period, ask in days, not months. “30 days” and “one month” can differ by up to a day depending on the calendar month. For arbitration, the day count is what shows up on the timeline.
Weeks to months for project planning
Software sprints are typically 2 weeks. Six sprints equals 12 weeks, or 2.76 months. That gap matters for quarterly OKRs. A quarter is 3 calendar months (13.04 weeks), so a 6-sprint cycle finishes about a week before the quarter closes. Many engineering teams plan in 13-week quarters (standard 4-4-5 calendar splits each quarter into 4-, 4-, and 5-week months) to keep sprint and quarter boundaries aligned.
Construction and renovation projects flip the convention. Contractors quote “3 months for a kitchen remodel” meaning 13 weeks of working days, but a US workweek is 5 days, so 13 weeks of work = 65 working days ≈ 91 calendar days ≈ 3 calendar months. The math lines up but only if both sides agree on working days versus calendar days.
The “one month” ambiguity
“One month” can mean five different things depending on context. In a lease, it usually means “the same numeric day of the following calendar month” (April 15 to May 15 = one month, 30 days). In banking, it often means 30 days flat (April 15 to May 15 may settle on May 14 or 15 depending on weekend rules). In medicine, it means 4.345 weeks. In contracts, it can mean 28 or 30 days. The calculator above uses the medical and statistical standard: 4.348 weeks.
Some shortcut systems use 4.33 (52/12 = 4.333), which underestimates a month by 0.4 percent and adds up to about 1.5 days of drift across a year. For most everyday math the difference is invisible. For pregnancy due dates and lease end dates, 4.348 is the safe number.
Common weeks-to-months mistakes
- Dividing by 4: turns 40 weeks into 10 months, a 9% overestimate. Always divide by 4.345 or 4.348.
- Confusing weeks and months in pregnancy: “I am 6 months pregnant” could be 23, 24, 25, 26, or 27 weeks depending on counting style. Ask for weeks.
- Conceptional vs. gestational age: the two differ by 2 weeks. Medical apps display gestational age unless told otherwise.
- Counting partial months as full: 8 weeks is 1.84 months, not 2. Rent prorations and severance pay are sensitive to this.
- Mixing calendar and working weeks: 12 weeks of work = 12 calendar weeks at most jobs but only 60 working days, which can land slightly short of 3 calendar months.
- Lunar vs. solar months: 4 weeks (lunar) vs. 4.348 weeks (solar) differ by 2.5 days. Religious calendars, traditional Japanese pregnancy counting, and astronomy use lunar months.
