The numbers feel enormous because we usually file age under "years" — a unit so compressed that an entire childhood reads as a single digit. Counting age in minutes blows that compression apart. It is the same elapsed time, expressed at the resolution your heart and breath actually run at: about 72 beats and 16 breaths every minute, around the clock, for as long as you live.
The calculation itself is trivial — subtract birth time from now, divide by 60 seconds. Why measure age in minutes
Years are the natural unit for biological aging — the planet's revolution around the sun, the calendar that drives birthdays, school years, retirement ages. But the year hides a lot. One year of a four-year-old's life is 25% of everything they have lived. One year of a sixty-year-old's life is 1.67%. The unit is fixed; the perceived weight is not.

Modern JavaScript's Date object handles leap years, leap seconds, daylight saving boundaries, and time zones automatically — you don't need to write any of that arithmetic yourself.

Minutes vs days, years, and seconds
The age-in-days unit is popular for newborns — "she's six weeks old" or "ninety days old". The day stops being useful after about a year, when the count exceeds 365 and people switch to years. Seconds run the other way: useful for hyper-short comparisons (your heartbeat takes about 0.83 seconds at resting pulse), but a 30-year-old's age in seconds is already 946,728,000 — the number stops being intuitive past a few thousand.
Minutes occupy a middle band. A million minutes is reachable (just under two years) and the figure feels concrete: it is about how long an active adult is awake in three-and-a-half years, or how long a typical commuter spends driving to work over forty years. The unit makes life-scale numbers comprehensible.
The musical "Rent" famously asks how to measure a year in 525,600 minutes — that's exactly 365 days × 1,440 minutes. The true average year is 525,960 minutes because of the leap day every four years. It's tempting to read the "percent of life lived" figure as a personal countdown. It is not. National life expectancy at birth averages every infant death, every accident, every chronic condition across the whole population. An individual's odds depend heavily on their current age (life expectancy increases the older you get, because you've already survived earlier risks), health status, family history, and lifestyle factors. The percentage is a perspective tool, not a forecast.
The longest verified human lifetime — Jeanne Calment of Arles, France, born 1875, died 1997 — was 122 years and 164 days. That works out to 64,259,712 minutes. No verified human has crossed 65 million minutes. The supercentenarian record has held since 1997 and shows no sign of being beaten any time soon.

Counting minutes lets you map them to physiological events at known rates. The American Heart Association puts the resting adult heart rate at 60–100 beats per minute, averaging around 72 bpm. A typical adult breathes 12–20 times per minute — 16 is the usual textbook figure. The National Sleep Foundation's adult recommendation is 7–9 hours per night; that's a third of every 24-hour cycle spent asleep.
Run the math on a 40-year-old and the numbers are striking: about 1.5 billion heartbeats, 336 million breaths, and 7 million minutes (roughly 13 years) spent sleeping. These are population estimates — an athlete's heart at 50 bpm shaves a third off the heartbeat total; a smoker's breathing rate may push it higher. Common mistakes when counting age in minutes
Without a time of birth, the calculator defaults to noon. A baby born at midnight would land 12 hours off in either direction — 720 minutes. That's negligible over decades but produces a visibly different second-count if you're showing off a result at high resolution. Find your birth time on the birth certificate if you can.
The 365-day approximation drifts by one day every four years. By age 80 that's 20 days — nearly 29,000 minutes off. The Julian year of 525,960 minutes (using 365.25 days) cancels out leap years over any multi-year span and stays accurate to under 0.003%.
Life expectancy at birth is a population average that includes infant mortality, accidents, and chronic disease at every age. Someone who is already 60 has, on average, more remaining life than the at-birth figure suggests — they have survived the earlier hazards. Don't treat the "% of life lived" reading as a personal countdown clock.
