Square yards are the standard area unit for carpet and many flooring materials in the United States and United Kingdom. Even when retailers quote prices in square feet, suppliers still order rolls and tile by the yard, and the conversion factor of 9 sq ft per sq yd is the most-used flooring math in the trade. This calculator converts between square yards, square feet, square meters, square inches, and acres for any common shape.

What is a square yard?

A square yard (yd²) is the area of a square whose sides each measure exactly one yard, or three feet. Since area scales as the square of length, one square yard equals 3 × 3 = 9 square feet. The unit appears in flooring, textiles, landscaping, and US real estate. Britain and Commonwealth countries also use the square yard despite official metrication.

The yard itself dates to medieval England, standardized at three feet (36 inches) by Henry I in roughly 1101. The modern international yard is defined as exactly 0.9144 meters under the 1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement. From that definition, one square yard equals exactly 0.83612736 square meters.

How to calculate square yards

For a rectangle, multiply length by width. If your measurements are in yards, the result is square yards directly. If in feet, multiply length × width and divide by 9. A 15 × 12 ft room equals 5 × 4 yd = 20 sq yd, or equivalently 180 sq ft ÷ 9 = 20 sq yd. Always include 10-15% waste when ordering material.

For other shapes, use the standard area formulas and divide by 9 if needed. A circular patio with 10-ft radius: A = π × 100 = 314.2 sq ft = 34.9 sq yd. A triangular garden bed with 10-ft base and 8-ft height: A = 0.5 × 10 × 8 = 40 sq ft = 4.4 sq yd. A trapezoidal lot with parallel sides 30 ft and 40 ft and height 50 ft: A = 0.5 × (30 + 40) × 50 = 1,750 sq ft = 194.4 sq yd.

Square yard conversion factors

Square yard conversions all derive from the yard definition: 1 yd = 3 ft = 36 in = 0.9144 m. Squaring gives the area factors. One square yard = 9 sq ft = 1,296 sq in = 0.836127 sq m. One acre = 4,840 sq yd = 43,560 sq ft = 4,046.86 sq m.

Going the other way: 1 sq m = 1.19599 sq yd. 1 sq ft = 0.1111 sq yd (or 1/9). 1 acre = 4,840 sq yd. The calculator handles all these conversions automatically — enter any unit, get the area in all five common units displayed side by side.

Square yards for carpet

Carpet is traditionally manufactured in 12-foot-wide rolls. Pricing is quoted per square yard, even when retail tags show per square foot. A 12 × 15 ft roll section equals 180 sq ft = 20 sq yd. At $35 per sq yd that section costs $700, plus installation labor of roughly $4-7 per sq yd in 2025-2026 pricing.

Carpet ordering needs 10-15% waste added. The waste covers seam allowances, pattern matching across joins, and inevitable cutting errors. For a 16 × 20 ft room (320 sq ft = 35.5 sq yd), order 35.5 × 1.15 = 40.8 sq yd, rounded up to 41 sq yd. Plain rooms use 10%; patterned carpet or stair runners often need 15-20%.

Square yards for flooring

Hard flooring quotes vary by material. Tile and laminate often quote per square foot. Vinyl plank and hardwood sometimes quote per square yard wholesale but per square foot retail. The calculator gives you both columns, so whatever the supplier uses you can compare quotes directly.

Hard flooring waste runs lower than carpet: 5-10% is typical for plain rooms. Diagonal layouts, herringbone, and ornate patterns push waste to 15-20%. Tile installations also need extra for grout joints — a 12 × 12 inch tile with 1/8-inch joints actually covers slightly less than 1 sq ft per piece. Most calculators ignore this 2% effect; add it when ordering large tile areas.

Square yards for landscaping

Landscaping uses square yards for mulch coverage, sod, ground cover, and gravel calculations. One cubic yard of mulch covers approximately 100 sq ft at 3-inch depth, or about 11 sq yd. So a 50 sq yd garden bed at 3 inches needs about 4.5 cu yd of mulch. The conversion between square yard area and cubic yard volume passes through the depth.

Sod is sold by the square yard or by pallet (a typical pallet covers 50 sq yd). For a 25 × 30 ft lawn area, you need 750 sq ft = 83.3 sq yd of sod, or about 1.67 pallets. Order whole pallets — partial pallets cost more per square yard. Always order 5-10% extra for cutting around irregular edges.

Common square yard mistakes

The most common error is mixing units mid-calculation. Multiplying length in feet by width in yards gives an answer in feet × yards, which equals 3 × sq feet. The result is wrong by a factor of 3. Always check that both dimensions use the same unit before multiplying, or use the calculator's automatic conversion.

A second error is rounding waste down. Carpet at 20.4 sq yd needed often gets rounded to 20 sq yd ordered. The 0.4 sq yd shortfall typically requires a second delivery and a second seam, both more expensive than the extra material would have been. Always round up after applying waste percentage.
