Thinset Calculator for Tile Mortar
A thinset calculator estimates how many 50-lb bags of tile mortar you need for a given floor, wall, or backsplash area. The math takes your tile square footage, multiplies by a waste factor, and divides by the coverage rate for your chosen trowel notch size. For 100 sq ft of standard tile with a 1/4" notch, the answer is usually 2 bags.
The calculator above includes preset coverage values for 1/8", 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" trowels along with a 10-percent default waste factor. Adjust either value if your supplier quotes different coverage or if you want a tighter or looser margin.
What is thinset mortar?
Thinset is a cement-based adhesive used to bond ceramic, porcelain, and stone tile to floors, walls, and counters. It is called "thin-set" because the application layer is thin (about 3/32 to 1/4 inch after compression), much thinner than the 1/2-inch beds used in traditional mud-set installations. The mortar contains Portland cement, fine sand, and chemical additives that retain water and improve adhesion.
Modern thinset varieties are governed by ANSI A118 standards. ANSI A118.1 covers basic dry-set Portland cement mortar. A118.4 adds latex or acrylic polymers for higher strength and flexibility. A118.15 is the premium grade required for large-format tile and demanding installations like exterior cladding or steam showers.
The thinset bag calculation formula
The formula has three inputs: tile area (square feet), trowel notch coverage rate (sq ft per 50-lb bag), and waste factor (percent). Multiply area by 1 plus the waste fraction to get adjusted area. Divide by the coverage rate to get exact bag count. Round up to whole bags. The calculator handles all three steps in one calculation.
Example: 100 sq ft using a 1/4" square-notch trowel (80 sq ft per bag) with 10 percent waste = 100 × 1.10 ÷ 80 = 1.375 bags. Round up to 2 bags. You will have leftover material, which is normal and budget-friendly compared with running short mid-job and having to mix a fresh batch on a different day.

Trowel notch size dictates how much mortar lands under each tile. Larger tiles need larger notches because they require deeper mortar beds to lock down evenly. The rule of thumb: notch depth should be at least 2/3 of the tile back relief. For flat-backed tiles, match the notch to the tile size.
Mosaic tiles (1-2 inch) use a 1/8 inch V-notch. Standard 4-6 inch field tile uses a 1/4 inch square or V-notch. Tiles in the 12-16 inch range need a 3/8 inch notch. Large-format tile (LFT) over 16 inches requires a 1/2 inch notch plus back-buttering (a thin coat of mortar applied to the tile back) to ensure 95-percent contact coverage in wet areas.

Thinset coverage rates by tile size
Coverage rates depend on the notch size and the back of the tile. Manufacturers publish coverage at 50-lb bag scale, but real-world numbers vary based on substrate flatness, troweling technique, and how much mortar back-butters onto tile bottoms. The values built into this calculator come from Laticrete, Mapei, and TEC technical data sheets.
The ANSI A108.5 standard requires 80 percent mortar coverage under tile in dry interior areas and 95 percent coverage in wet areas (showers, pool surrounds, exteriors). The only practical way to hit 95 percent is back-buttering the tile back in addition to combing the substrate with a notched trowel.
Modified vs unmodified thinset
Modified thinset (ANSI A118.4) contains polymer additives that boost adhesion, flexibility, and freeze-thaw resistance. It costs more but is required for large-format tile, showers, exteriors, over uncoupling membranes, and any installation subject to movement. Unmodified thinset (ANSI A118.1) is cheaper and works for indoor floors with small to medium tile on stable substrates.
The unhappy middle case: applying modified thinset under a polyethylene membrane like Schluter Ditra. Schluter's standard spec calls for unmodified thinset both between Ditra and the substrate and between Ditra and tile (only rapid-cure modified mortars on Schluter's approved-products list are exceptions). Read the membrane manufacturer's spec before buying mortar.
Mixing and curing thinset properly
Mix thinset with a paddle mixer in a 5-gallon bucket. Add water first (about 5 quarts for a 50-lb bag of modified mortar), then dump in the dry mix, and run the mixer at 200-300 RPM. The target consistency is peanut butter: thick enough to hold ridges from the notched trowel without slumping, thin enough to spread smoothly.
Let the mixed mortar slake for 5-10 minutes after the first mix. This lets the additives fully hydrate. Remix briefly before using. Working time after mixing is typically 30-45 minutes for modified thinset and 20-30 minutes for unmodified, depending on temperature and humidity. Throw out any mortar that has started to stiffen.
Once thinset starts to set up, adding more water (re-tempering) destroys the bond strength. The polymers and cement have begun chemical reactions you cannot reverse. Mix only what you can use in 30-40 minutes, and dump the leftover when it gets stiff.
Common thinset estimating mistakes
The first mistake is using the wrong notch size. A 1/4 inch notch under a 12-inch tile gives insufficient mortar coverage, leading to hollow spots that crack when stepped on. Always size up the trowel notch for large tiles, even if it means more bags.
The second mistake is ignoring substrate condition. A wavy or out-of-plane subfloor eats mortar fast because each high spot gets a thin layer and each low spot needs extra. Suppliers' coverage rates assume a flat, prepared substrate. For a rough subfloor, increase the waste factor to 15-20 percent.
The third mistake is buying too few bags to save money. The cost difference between 2 and 3 bags is small, but stopping mid-job to drive to the store risks dried-out tile, wasted mortar, and lost momentum. Order one extra bag for any job under 200 sq ft.
For shower pans and wet areas, plan to back-butter every tile in addition to combing the substrate. This doubles your mortar consumption (so use 50-percent waste factor) but is the only reliable way to hit the ANSI 95-percent coverage requirement and prevent water-trapped voids that lead to cracked grout and lippage.
