The EPA estimates household leaks collectively waste 900 billion gallons of water in the United States every year — enough to supply more than 11 million homes. The average house loses 9,400 gallons annually from leaks alone, and 10 percent of homes lose 90+ gallons per day. A dripping faucet is rarely the biggest culprit (running toilets win that contest) but it is the easiest to count, so it makes a good starting point.
What is a dripping faucet?
A dripping faucet is a small, continuous water leak from a closed tap. The visible drops fall into the sink at a measurable rate — usually 10 to 120 drops per minute. The cause is almost always a failed seal somewhere in the valve: a worn rubber washer, a damaged O-ring, a corroded valve seat, or sediment lodged between sealing surfaces. Older compression-style faucets fail this way most often; modern ceramic-disc cartridges fail later, but they fail too.
Internal leaks are subtler. Water may drip past the valve stem and travel down the inside of the body before reaching the spout, surfacing as a slow puddle around the base or a damp cabinet below. These hidden faucet leaks waste the same water but get noticed months later, by which time the cabinet has often rotted.
The USGS Water Science School established that one US gallon contains about 15,140 standard faucet drops. The standard drop volume is 0.25 mL, set by measuring drops from typical kitchen and bathroom sink faucets. Smaller orifices produce drops as small as 0.05 mL, which would take about 75,700 drops to fill a gallon.
How the drip-faucet calculator works
Count the drips for one minute with a cup under the spout, type the number into the calculator, and the annual gallons appear immediately. Behind the scenes the calculator multiplies drips per minute by 1,440 minutes per day, then by the 0.25 mL drop volume, then divides by 3,785.41 mL per US gallon, then multiplies by 365 days. The math is the same the USGS publishes for its public drip activity.
You can reverse the calculation. Enter a target annual gallon figure (say, the 2,500 gallons a typical lawn irrigation system uses) and the calculator returns the drip rate that would waste the same volume — useful for benchmarking a leak against household demand.

The reference table in the right-hand panel covers five common rates. A slow drip at 10 per minute loses only 347 gallons per year — under a single shower per week. A steady one-per-second drip (60 per minute) reaches 2,080 gallons annually, the volume of 40 typical 5-minute showers. A heavy 120-drip leak doubles that. Anything above 300 drips per minute is no longer a drip; it is a thin stream and wastes 10,000+ gallons per year.

Cost of a dripping faucet on your bill
Water rates vary widely. The US national average is around $0.003 per gallon (about three cents per ten gallons), but coastal California, Texas during drought emergencies, and some New England utilities run higher — $0.008 to $0.012 per gallon. Sewer charges are usually billed alongside water and add 50 to 100 percent on top, since utilities assume what flows in eventually flows out.
At average rates, a moderate one-per-second drip costs $6 per year in water plus another $5-6 in sewer — call it $12 total. Run that for three years before noticing (common, because slow leaks fly under the radar) and you have $35 down the drain. Multiple drips multiply the figure: a typical US home has 2-3 faucets plus a showerhead and an outdoor spigot, any of which can develop a slow leak.
The EPA reports that 10 percent of US homes have leaks wasting 90+ gallons per day — usually a running toilet, a frost-cracked hose bibb, or a slab leak. The visible faucet drip is the easy fix. If your water bill is mysteriously high, shut off all fixtures and check whether the meter still runs.
Dripping faucet vs running toilet
A faucet drip wastes 1-12 gallons per day at typical rates. A running toilet wastes 200-300+ gallons per day. A toilet with a constantly flowing flapper is roughly 30-100 times worse than a steady faucet drip. If you find both in the same house, fix the toilet first — the payback is dramatic.
Diagnose a silent toilet leak by adding food coloring to the tank and waiting 15 minutes without flushing. If color appears in the bowl, the flapper is leaking. Replacements cost $5-15 and take 10 minutes to install.
Fixing a dripping faucet
Most faucet leaks are DIY-fixable. Compression faucets need a new washer (under $5 and ten minutes); cartridge faucets need a new cartridge ($15-40 and twenty minutes); ceramic-disc faucets need a new disc seal kit ($10-25). YouTube has model-specific repair videos for nearly every faucet sold in the past 30 years. If the leak is from the valve stem rather than the spout, or if water pressure is unusually high (above 80 psi), call a plumber.
EPA WaterSense Fix a Leak Week falls in March each year. Many US utilities run rebates for low-flow aerators ($5 installation can cut a faucet's flow by 30 percent) and free leak-detection visits during this period — check your utility's website.
Environmental impact of faucet leaks
Water itself is rarely the binding constraint; energy to treat and deliver it is. Each 1,000 gallons of municipal water requires about 1 kWh of electricity to treat and pump, generating roughly 1.5 kg of CO₂e on a mixed grid. A 60-drip-per-minute leak adds 3.1 kg of CO₂e per year on top of the wasted water — small per household, but multiplied across the 33 million US homes with leaks it reaches 100,000+ tonnes of CO₂e annually.
Beyond carbon, water scarcity is the bigger issue. Only 0.5 percent of Earth's water is usable freshwater, and roughly 4 billion people experience severe scarcity at least one month per year. Climate change is shrinking snowpack-fed reservoirs (the Colorado River basin lost 20 percent of its average flow since 2000). Fixing the easy leaks — a faucet washer, a toilet flapper — is the most accessible first step in conservation.
