Lawn seed rates by grass type

Seed size is the hidden variable. A small seed like Kentucky bluegrass needs less mass to deliver the same number of plants per square inch. A heavy seed like tall fescue needs much more weight to hit the same target density. Extension services target roughly 15–20 viable seeds per square inch for cool-season turf — enough to fill in without choking each other out.

It naturalised so thoroughly across the Kentucky bluegrass region that the common name stuck — by the 19th century, no one remembered it had been imported.

New lawn seed vs overseeding rates

Overseeding existing turf takes roughly half the new-lawn rate. The existing grass already holds soil in place and shades part of the surface, so fewer new seeds need to survive to deliver visible thickening. The University of Maryland Extension recommends overseeding cool-season lawns every two to three years to suppress weeds and replace plants lost to disease, drought, or foot traffic.

Patch repair sits between the two rates — about 75% of the new-lawn figure. Bald spots have no existing turf to compete with, but the surrounding lawn shades the edges, so a slightly lighter rate than full new-lawn seeding works. Heavy is not better

Doubling the seeding rate does not double the lawn density — it creates competition. Crowded seedlings fight for water, light, and nutrients; many die before establishing roots. The Michigan State University extension flags overseeding as one of the most common reasons new lawns fail to thicken as expected.

When to plant lawn seed

Timing is more critical than rate. Cool-season grasses germinate at soil temperatures of 50–65 °F — conditions that occur from mid-August through September in the northern U.S. and a few weeks later in the transition zone. The University of Minnesota Extension calls late summer the single most important factor for cool-season seeding success: warm soil speeds germination, cooling air slows weed competition, and rain becomes more reliable.

Warm-season grasses (Bermuda, zoysia, bahia) want soil at 65–70 °F minimum, which means late May through June in most of their range. Seeding before that runs the seed through a cold soil interval where it sits idle and predated by birds.

Cool-season vs warm-season seed

The cool-season group — Kentucky bluegrass, fescues, perennial ryegrass — stays green from spring through autumn and goes semi-dormant in summer drought. It dominates the northern half of the United States and southern Canada. Warm-season grasses — Bermuda, zoysia, bahia, St. Augustine — thrive in summer heat, brown out after the first hard frost, and re-green in late spring. They cover the southern U.S. tier.

The transition zone — roughly Virginia to northern Texas — is the only region where both groups can grow, and neither thrives. Tall fescue is the most common choice there because it tolerates summer heat better than other cool-season species, but Bermuda also performs in the sunniest sites.

Zoysia from seed germinates slowly and unevenly — 14 to 21 days versus 5–7 for perennial ryegrass — and many homeowners report patchy results. The University of Tennessee and most southern extension services recommend plugs spaced 12 inches apart instead. Plugs fill in within a single growing season and avoid the bare-spot establishment phase entirely.

Reading a lawn seed label

U.S. and Canadian grass-seed bags list four numbers that change what you actually get for your money. The species percentages tell you the blend — a bag labeled "tall fescue" can legally contain 30% of other grasses. The germination rate (typically 80–90% for fresh seed) tells you what fraction will sprout under ideal conditions. Pure seed percentage tells you how much of the bag mass is actually seed versus inert filler. Multiply germination by pure seed to get Pure Live Seed (PLS), the only number that actually drives lawn coverage.

A bag advertised at 95% pure seed and 85% germination has 80.75% PLS. A bag at 80% and 70% drops to 56% PLS — nearly a third less viable seed per pound. The cheaper bag often costs more per usable pound. Extension services in Arkansas and Kansas State specifically recommend buying on PLS, not advertised weight.

Avoid old seed

Grass seed loses viability after about a year, even sealed. The germination date is required on the bag — check it. Discount stores sometimes sell seed left over from the prior spring at a steep markdown. Saving $5 per bag is no bargain if only 50% of the seed germinates.

Common lawn-seeding mistakes

Seeding without soil contact

Seed broadcast over thatch, leaves, or untilled compacted soil germinates poorly. Cool-season seed needs to make direct contact with bare mineral soil. Rake or lightly till the surface first; for overseeding, core-aerate to open holes the seed can fall into.

Letting the seedbed dry out

New seed must stay continuously moist until germination is complete — that is 14 days for most cool-season species and 21+ for some hardwoods. The University of Maryland Extension recommends light watering twice daily during the first two weeks rather than one deep soak. Once the lawn is 1 inch tall, cut back to once-daily and then to the normal once or twice per week schedule.

Pre-emergent herbicide before seeding

Many lawn herbicides (including most crabgrass preventers) block grass seed germination too. Most product labels require a 4–16 week interval between application and seeding. Apply pre-emergent in spring; seed in late summer; never combine them in the same season unless the label specifically permits.
