Formulas

The length converter routes through meters as the canonical unit. Every other unit has a single multiplier “to meters,” and the conversion is a single multiply-then-divide.

What is a length converter?

A length converter is a calculator that multiplies a length by an exact factor to express the same distance in a different unit. The math is trivial; the engineering is in the factors. Every modern length converter uses values fixed by international treaty so that “1 inch = 2.54 cm” means exactly 2.54 cm, not approximately.

The length converter on this page lets you choose any source and any target unit. Internally the value is converted to meters first, then divided by the target’s “to meters” factor. The two-step route guarantees consistency: every pair uses the same canonical hub and the same exact constants.

Length converter: metric (SI) units

The metric portion of the length converter is straightforward decimal arithmetic. Each prefix is a power of ten relative to the meter: mm is 10-3, cm is 10-2, m is 100, km is 103. Going one prefix up multiplies by ten; going down divides by ten.

This regularity is why the metric system replaced earlier scientific units across most of the world by 1900. A length converter inside the metric system needs no factors at all — just shift the decimal point. The international nautical mile is a separate unit fixed at exactly 1,852 m by the 1929 International Hydrographic Conference. It is used in aviation and maritime navigation because one nautical mile equals one minute of arc along a meridian: a clean tie between distance on a chart and latitude.

The length converter on this page includes nmi alongside the statute mile. The two differ: 1 nmi = 1.151 mi = 1.852 km. Air traffic control and marine radar quote distances in nautical miles; road traffic uses statute miles in the US and UK. Mixing them up by 15% is a real navigational error.

The meter and the speed of light

The meter started in 1791 as one ten-millionth of the distance from the Equator to the North Pole, along the meridian through Paris. The French Academy of Sciences sent two astronomers, Delambre and Méchain, to survey the arc; the result was a platinum bar 1 m long, stored in Paris and copied for use abroad.

The 1875 Metre Convention formalised the bar as the international standard. In 1960 the meter was redefined against the wavelength of orange-red light from krypton-86. In 1983 the BIPM made the final move: the meter is the distance light travels in vacuum in 1/299,792,458 second. The length converter inherits that exact definition for every metric unit.

Tip

For everyday mental conversions, memorise four ratios: 1 in ≈ 2.5 cm, 1 ft ≈ 30 cm, 1 m ≈ 3.3 ft, 1 mi ≈ 1.6 km. Each is off by 1% or less, which is enough for travel and quick estimation. Use the length converter for any case where accuracy matters.

Length converter mistakes to avoid

The classic mistake is treating the international yard as identical to the older US Survey yard. The difference is 2 ppm — tiny for everyday use, but enough to misalign property boundaries over a multi-mile parcel. NIST retired the US Survey foot and yard on 1 January 2023, and the length converter uses the international yard universally.

The second mistake is confusing statute and nautical miles. A flight plan in nautical miles converted to kilometers using the statute-mile factor will be 15% short. Aviation charts always specify nmi or mi explicitly; cross-check before any length converter operation that involves a map.

A third pitfall is mixing decimal feet and feet-plus-inches notation. A surveyor’s “5.50 ft” means 5 feet 6 inches, not 5 feet 50 hundredths-of-something else. Architectural plans in the US sometimes mix the conventions on the same page. Convert to a single notation before running the length converter and the result will line up.

Finally, watch out for height in “feet only” vs “feet and inches.” A passport that lists a height as 5.10 might mean 5 ft 10 in (178 cm) or 5.10 ft = 5 ft 1.2 in (155 cm). Always confirm the format. The length converter uses decimal feet, so type 5.833 to get 5 ft 10 in correctly.

Cubic and square units are different

A length converter handles linear length only. To convert square units (m² to ft²) square the linear factor: 1 m² = 3.28082 = 10.764 ft². For cubic (m³ to ft³) cube it: 1 m³ = 35.315 ft³. Use the area or volume converters for those cases.
