How birth-from-death-date math works

The death date is almost always the more reliable of the two anchors. It is recorded close to the event — on a death certificate within days, on a parish register within hours, on a tombstone within months. The age at death, by contrast, is reported by a relative or undertaker who may not have known it precisely. The calculator therefore treats death as exact and works backward.

The arithmetic itself is mechanical. Subtract the day count first, then the months, then the years. When a subtraction takes the day below 1, borrow days from the previous month. When months go below 1, borrow 12 from the year. Where to find the age-at-death figure

Tombstones are the richest source. A well-cut 19th-century stone typically gives the death date plus the age in years, months, and days — everything the birth-from-death-date calculation needs. The detail drops off after about 1920 as stone-carving practice shifted toward simpler inscriptions.

Death certificates fill the gap. U.S. state-level death registration started state-by-state between 1900 and 1933; before that, only some cities and counties registered deaths. Modern certificates give age in years and sometimes months; very few give the day count. Obituaries usually quote the age as a single number ("aged 71") and occasionally drop into the "in his 72nd year" phrasing.

Exact calendar vs 30-day (8870) method

The exact-calendar method respects real month lengths and leap years. It is what most modern genealogy software uses, and it matches what the registrar would have computed if they had taken the time to step through each month. For a death date of 15 March 1887 and an age of 74 years 3 months 12 days, the exact result is 3 December 1812.

The 30-day method — sometimes called the 8870 method after the constant 8,870 used in one version of the hand procedure — treats every month as 30 days and every year as 365. It was the workhorse for 19th-century clerks because it could be done with pencil and paper without consulting a calendar. For the same example, it returns 4 December 1812 — one day off. About two-thirds of the time the two methods agree exactly; the remaining third disagree by 1 to 7 days.

Don't pick a method without checking the source era

If the source record was created before about 1950, the recorded age was almost certainly computed using the 30-day method. Matching your reconstruction to the method the original clerk used produces a tighter result. After 1950, perpetual calendars and printed tables made the exact method routine.

Pre-1752 dates and other edge cases

September 1752 is the hard boundary. Britain and its American colonies switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar that month, dropping 11 days outright — 2 September 1752 was followed by 14 September 1752. Records that straddle the cutover or fall entirely before it require a Julian-to-Gregorian conversion before the birth-from-death-date subtraction is meaningful. The MyHeritage education portal and Cyndi's List both maintain reference material on the switch.

The British civil year also changed on the same date. Before 1752, the year started on 25 March (Lady Day); from 1752 onward, on 1 January. A burial dated "12 February 1750" in an English parish register is what we would call February 1751 today. The calculator treats all dates as Gregorian with a January-start year, so any pre-1752 result carries the ±10-day caveat displayed in the warning.

One birth-from-death-date computation is a hypothesis, not a conclusion. Census records are the most common second source: U.S. federal censuses since 1850 list age in completed years. If your computed birth date falls within ±1 year of the census-derived range, the figure is solid.

Citing a birth-from-death-date result

Every computed birth date should be cited as approximate. The genealogical convention is the "c." prefix (Latin circa) plus the date and a margin: "c. 3 December 1812 (±7 days)" is the format most journals prefer. The source citation should name the death record, the age statement, the method used, and the calculator or hand procedure that produced the result.

Never present a computed birth date as exact
